Inertia welded drill rod uses advanced manufacturing techniques to bond a precision machined tool joint to top quality, alloy tubing. A piece of pipe is held stationary and the tool joint is clamped in a spindle chuck. The chuck accelerates to a pre-set speed, the drive is cut, and the two pieces are thrust together. Friction between the pieces slows the flywheel and heats their interfaces enough to soften, but not melt them. Just before rotation stops, the parts bond. The remaining energy hot-works the weld, expelling voids and impurities and refining the grain structure. The end result is a high-quality, productive tool that won’t break the bank.
